Oh. That's unfortunate. I can provide a summary for everyone: "There doesn't seem to be any practical way to make executions humane. We probably shouldn't be executing people in 2024".

I am interested in watching just to see what angle he looks at it from. I have this image in my head of John Oliver as kind of hyperbolic but it's been a while since I've watched the show so maybe I just havent given it a chance. And I am also wondering if he will cover the things I am thinking of.
However all my wondering and dreaming will have to continue for the foreseeable future, as the uploader has not made this video available in my country.

I like John Oliver for two reasons:
He is a solid source of infotainment. The kind you can throw on long enough to wash some dishes or fold some laundry.
He will sometimes make a piece that gets airtime outside of his normal audience and has potential to make a real impact.
But generally speaking, he can be counted on to hold the same views as Reddit. I'm a bleeding heart lefty but sometimes I find that Oliver will ignore nuance in order to present the most idealistic and left-wing view possible. Other times, he does a fantastic job covering the finer details and presenting a more balanced view. It's just hit or miss depending on the topic.

Direct, specific claims will probably be well-fact checked, broad strokes will probably be close enough to true, but humor will always take priority and they should never be your only source on a subject.
That's right before he brings up some actually very impressive investigative journalism done in the service of "stirring shit up", though. That's what made me think of the similarities to Cracked....

They would do interviews with ISIS soldiers and in-depth looks at America's homeless problem, all as a vehicle for boner jokes.
I looked it up and in fact seems that both of them work for Last Week Tonight, although Gurewitch was from CollegeHumor rather than Cracked now that I think about it.

Thanks for sharing. I'm American and I pretty much assumed he was mostly correct about Brazilian affairs because I know so little about them. I'm glad you shared this so I can be more discerning...

I've been watching LWT from a foreign country for some years when the segments are released on YouTube. Usually they're region-locked for a month or so and then made available more widely.

Surprisingly, this YouTube video is actually blocked in the USA too (the link I provided shows which countries it's blocked in), which is why I mentioned not even being able to use my US VPN to view it. It's mostly South America, East Asia, and Eastern Europe (plus France) where the video is actually available to watch.
I don't entirely understand the point of the region lock.
AFAIK, most of the time it's due to contractual obligations between the various TV Networks who are licensing content from each other. E.g. It's most likely blocked here in Canada because Bell Canada paid HBO for the exclusive rights to air Last Week Tonight on their Crave platform here. And it will probably be a similar situation with some other local network having bought the rights in all the other countries where it's being blocked on YouTube... Other than China, where it's probably just blocked because it's considered "western propaganda" or some such thing.
My best guess is that at least the executions segment will get posted to the US available videos at some point, but here are some other segments on similar topics from LWT - no idea how available...

I'm just delighted that I posted a video no one can watch and it got 5 votes and 9 comments. I'm pretty sure the actual video would have gotten much less activity :P

I was able to watch the whole episode and I don't have much to say besides "holy fuck", "I generally agree with his take" and "maybe I need a screen in my house that's just playing dogs running in slow-motion 24-7." None of which seems likely to lead to lively discussion.
It's on the full episode, not the main story. I'm sorry to get your hopes up! I found you this to make it up to you. There's less variety in this one, but I still think it's pretty great.

Taking the video from Thursday last week as a reference, and using the page cfabbro linked elsewhere in the comments, they seem to be blocked in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

HBO is publishing entire episodes to YouTube now. I am posting for the segment on executions. The time code is relevant.
They're pretty heavily region locked though, unfortunately. I can't even use my US or UK VPNs to watch them. :(

Hah, I would certainly expect that would be his position. Anything else would have been newsworthy in itself.

Funnily enough, in this video John Oliver reiterates: "this show is not about journalism, but entertainment"

Is that Dan OBrien? Or Dan Gurwich? I feel like there was a Dan from a comedy site who worked on last week tonight.
Daniel O'Brien.
I looked it up and in fact seems that both of them work for Last Week Tonight, although Gurewitch was from CollegeHumor rather than Cracked now that I think about it.
Ah, I'm not as familiar with the staff of CollegeHumor.

It works in Sweden if you're able to use a Swedish VPN.

Death Penalty
Lethal Injections
Solitary Confinement

Well then I'd need to wait until I watched the video. :p It's the real downside for me with video posts (and I loathe AI summaries)

To be fair, now that it's available, I'm excited to see the dogs tonight.

Your offering of penance has been accepted!
Taking the video from Thursday last week as a reference, and using the page cfabbro linked elsewhere in the comments, they seem to be blocked in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Okay, I think it will work now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOn3wba8c-Y
If this works, can someone replace the link in the post? Thanks.
Done!

Canada (plus UK, Ireland, and Australia) gets the short end of the stick once again! :(
At least I can use my US VPN to watch it now though, so thanks for letting us know about the more widely available one being posted.
