Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2024 - Results

Congrats to Lando Norris for finally breaking his record of most podiums without a win...by winning! Much deserved.

And because the F1 racing gods giveth and taketh away, I saw an unfortunate racing record for Kevin Magnussen: Most penalty points in a single weekend, with 6 points. He now has 10 out of 12 points before a race ban. And the earliest any of these points expire? March 2025. Yikes.

Though we'll see if he actually gets more points and/or a race ban.

Next race:

Emilia Romagna Grand Prix
Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari (Imola)

Really happy for Norris and overall found it to be a very entertaining race weekend. It was heartwarming to see the other drivers congratulating him. Hopefully McLaren can keep this pace moving forward.

Out of anybody who could win, I think Lando winning brings everybody together. Excellent weekend in an already excellent season.

I had seen the picture of him in an orange McLaren hat at the team celebration, but didn't know he was also spraying champagne! Just saw the video. That's awesome.

I really like Fred. He seems like the perfect balance of being serious but also light. perfect energy.

Oh wow I never saw his fun side, I always thought of him as a shark. Glad to see this version of him.

For me it looked like the penalties were inconsistent this weekend. Like the Piastri/Sainz incidents are no penalty, but Magnussen gets multiple for smaller infractions?

This has been my biggest issue with F1 this year. They seem to be letting tons of stuff go with no penalties, but then dishing out harsh penalties for other incidents which look almost identical.

Like the Alonso incident in Australia - They specifically said that Russel's crash didn't impact the decision. But then they didn't investigate Perez for almost taking out several cars at the start, even though he was clearly out of control and an incident was only avoided because Sainz turned out of the corner.

It really does feel like the stewards are letting biases strongly influence their decisions this year. It also feels like in many cases, they decide to give a penalty and then come up with the reasoning afterward.

I think the sport could really benefit from a permanent set of stewards. Surely, there are a handful of people out there who know the rules well and are able to apply them without bias.

I agree that the stewards should be permanent throughout the year, with exceptions for illness and other personal reasons. I'm pretty sure IndyCar manages to have a set of permanent stewards that goes to each race.

It might be easier with IndyCar since the races are only in the US and Canada, but at the same time, the F1 traveling circus flies all over the world with little to no issues. I don't see why stewards couldn't be part of the flying circus for the whole season. Niels Wittich, the current race director is at every race, and I'm sure other FIA staff are as well. I know one of the stewards is a representative of the local/national sporting authority. That just seems like a "gimmee" to the locals. I don't see why that would be necessary, especially if the basic rules don't change location to location.

I get why in other sports you need lots of referees and officials: there are just too many games/matches. MLB, at the most extreme for at least US sports, has like over 2400 games each season! But when there are only 23 F1 races throughout the whole year, it's much more manageable to have a permanent group.

This would make decisions more consistent. My only doubt is in case there is bias in the permanent group against a driver/team, then it would be there every race.

Piastri kept his car on track and in control. Racing hard and pushing the other car to the edge isn’t a penalty, but outbraking yourself to the point where you’re basically throwing your car against the other guy is. Think of it this way, if Lewis or Logan hadn’t been there, KMag would’ve ended up off track regardless, the lines he was taking were purpose built for pushing the other off track instead of properly defending or overtaking a position.

Super happy for Norris, feels like this has been a long time coming, since at least 2021. I'm hoping the updates help McLaren fight for wins at more tracks (Another Norris win at Silverstone would be cracking), We'll see at Imola and Monaco.

It might turn out to be an interesting year after all if the Ferrari and McLaren updates prove fruitful.
