It kind of feels like most people have forgotten that Sean said early on that he wanted more time to develop the game, but Sony, who was providing a lot of funding to them, pushed the release date way up in order to cash in on the holiday rush. I'd have done the same thing in his place if the entire project was threatened unless it was released unfinished. He has said on many occasions that the reason for all of the free updates and content was simply because he wanted to be able to finish the game, the way it was intended.
The unfortunate reality of today's landscape is that investors, which are needed for projects like this, want to see returns far sooner than the proper development of a game like no man's sky would allow. Consider how much time it takes for a new Bethesda title to get released, and then finally patched, then consider how possible something like that would be without heavy investment.
I think Sean and the crew at Hello did a hell of a good job, and I think it stands as an example of how games should be done.
I'm not super hyped on multi-player games like this but it has procedurally generated planets from a company that over-promised and later actually delivered. I think they've learned their lessons enough and now they have the experience to actually pull it off.
Whether or not they've learned their lesson, I've learned mine: No more pre-orders.
Definitely. Wait for reviews, then buy - or not.
I remember commenting to my friend I was watching this with basically saying, didn't this guy come up on stage 10 years ago and basically do that same thing he just did and was crucified for it?
Now that their team knows that hopefully they'll have figured it out though. The game itself looks pretty bare bones at the moment but that's probably because it's really early still. I do hope they figure out how to shake up the survival crafting formula a bit though, the genre as w hole has been pretty stale.
Yeah I'm amazed he was allowed to announce and hype up another game. Personally I won't believe a word he says until the game is released and stuff is proven to be in the game.
I'm hoping that he's learned his lesson at this point honestly, because having a second moment like this would be insane. We'll see when it's released though, I'm hoping he's grown enough that he understands it this time.
While I've been enjoying my time with NMS, it still suffers from the same "Different, but not really" worlds/creatures that most procedurally generated games suffer from.
