Man that is the craziest sentence I've read in a long time. I don't know that much about Baldwin, I've seen I'm Not Your Negro and have read some articles about him, but this is the first I'm...

He was in town working on a screenplay of Alex Haley’s Malcolm X autobiography, which was scuppered because of FBI interference (they insisted on reading every page Baldwin wrote) and because the studio was reportedly considering casting Charlton Heston as the Black revolutionary.

I don't know that much about Baldwin, I've seen I'm Not Your Negro and have read some articles about him, but this is the first I'm reading of him being a cinephile and somewhat of a film critic. His Exorcist comments are certainly interesting. His pitch to Bergman about the reincarnating man seems somewhat unfilmmable, although a pretty interesting idea.

Only one major adaptation of his work existing is pretty strange though. And in order for that one to get made relied on Jenkins winning Best Picture and then heiress Megan Ellison still giving out blank checks for directors. It was very much a right place right time for Beale Street to get made.
