It ended up effectively being more like a retroactive vlog put into a narrative order instead of a chronological one. I think if she just wanted to convey a message she could have easily edited it down to 30 minutes, but it's more like a play-by-play of the full 48 hours with additional context on the history of the hotel and surrounding shenanigans.

Generally I agree that videos that get this long, or really anything over 70 minutes, are just poorly edited. But this video is an exception.

I think it depends on the strictness of the rules - but I’m already much healthier than the average American. I have a boss who lives like that, though. Only whole foods, very little animal products, almost no added sugar in anything, eats restaurant food once per week in the form of a burrito, etc. For my personal health I’m happy with where I’m at - I exercise daily, eat dairy, very little meat, lots of beans, little alcohol, but still eating sweets most days. However as someone that donates blood in some form about once per month I’d be willing to adapt my lifestyle to help others more. I might not keep the changes forever but I also might really enjoy how I feel and stay super healthy.

Just watched the whole thing! I guess the TL;DW summary (mainly pulled from her concluding statement) is that the hotel wasn't great because it was created out of greed, not a desire to make a wonderful experience. Disney cut a lot of magical bits from the Star Wars park area and threw those things together into the hotel. Any extra bespoke bits for the hotel were cut back to save on costs. The actors were great but could only do so much to redeem the experience. The food and drinks were excellent.

I get the impression that the cost really would have been justified if the goal was something other than making the most amount of money within the timeframe the executives care about. In the end they used it as a $300 million tax write-off.

I saw the movie this past weekend. I'm generally positive on it, but I think the last sequence dragged on for too long. From shortly after the moment when the action star character gets into the blue-screen surrounded car to the last moment of victory I just wanted it to be over. I wasn't super invested in any of the antagonist characters and it was obvious what the ending would be. It was minute after minute of stunts in a movie already packed to the brim with them.

But there were a lot of funny moments and good action throughout so I'd give it an IMDb-scaled score of around 7.2.

I've got a little debian NUC with a 10 core i3 (really! 10 cores!) It's nice to have for hosting Minecraft servers with my friends, plex, and operate as a NAS.

Or donors could be evaluated and given recommendations for how to improve their ability to donate. Like how you might be told to supplement iron before donating blood.

it would also be easier to research what makes stool high quality (and possibly to culture high quality stool without the need for a donor).

Yes, you’d need to be at one of a few companies that pay this high and make it into a senior role. But even a mid level engineer at Google can make over $300k.

Not super important, but the $500k number would be about half salary, half stock, and a little bonus as well.

From my experience it’s derived from the unearned position of wealth and power given to young men. There is skill and effort involved in getting a high paid position in a major tech company. But does it compare to what’s required to get $500k/year in any other industry? No. It’s the easiest way to get rich - if you’re lucky.

So there’s a gap here where guys come to the conclusion that they’re just amazing and believe it’s all deserved. Sure you’re great at being a cog in the corporate machine, write good Java and can excel on a leetcode interview. In my opinion that doesn’t mean you’re better than other people. But if you do fall for this mental trap you equate your income with your value as a human. And those with less income have less value of course.

TeamBlind is a site where you have to verify your employee email domain. This puts a little brand logo next to your posts. Almost every post is ended with your total compensation, ex: "TC: 450k", whether it's relevant or not. And there's this small level of illusion here because your employer is verified by the site, but your TC is not. So people can say whatever they want for TC with the implication that it's more true than it would be on another site.

People will post things like: "How can I buy a wife? TC: 500k" Basically it's all a dick measuring contest, patriarchy boiled down to its tech-bro-iest refined state. Occasionally there's some mildly racist stuff there because the wrong type of immigrants are getting too many positions in some company.

I think it's too late for me. Attempting to perform significant amounts of thinking without looping the thoughts through English would be like trying to walk without using my muscles.

I can think without using an inner voice, but the train of thought peters out quickly without canonicalizing the thoughts through English.

There are two working modes of operation:

    1. Alternating spurts of pure thought followed by translation to English (essentially writing back over my short-term and working memory with the English, this is then what would be recalled as needed).
    2. A streamlined pure thought-to-English pipeline where I'm able to stream-of-consciousness speak my thoughts. Often after a sprint of this (lasting at most a minute or two) I need to recall what I just said to verify it as I would periodically in technique #1.
