When production can costs hundreds of thousands of dollars a day, winging it and letting the VFX team sort it out just isn't an option.

It's the patterns that form consciousness, like how atoms in a specific shape form an apple. But to try to define "apple" as a concrete thing when it's really just a word we use to describe the pattern that behaves like an apple seems counterintuitive.
Similarly, does "consciousness" describe a collection of first person experiences, or does it describe the patterns we've collectively decided are "conscious"? Wouldn't a p-zombie, to itself, appear to have a first person perspective?
I've rewritten this comment like a dozen times trying to express what I'm trying to say correctly, so sorry if it comes across a little weird lol.

It may be significantly less complex, but either way there's an amorphous network of signals that has an internal state change after experiencing a certain stimulus.

Fun thing that came out of this: they added a system sound to macOS called Sosumi ("so, sue me") in response to a lawsuit with Apple Corps over their sounds being too melodic.
