      Why MangaLove?

Finding new series is hard! The medium continues to become more mainstream and accessible, but that hasn't changed the fact that there's a lot of stuff to consume and few ways to find something you may like.

MangaLove offers an opportunity to sift through series loved by others, including those who might have divergent tastes from you. Think of this as an opportunity to venture outside of your comfort zone, with a series that you know someone else adores, from a small pool of thoughtful hand-selected options.

Is this just for Manga? Can I share Anime, or Manhwa, or...

Feel free to share any Anime, Manga, Manhwa, or Manhua that you love!

      What do I post?

Any series that you love and that you feel deserves more appreciation. There are no restrictions on genre, year, or anything else, and nothing is “too popular” or “too niche”. If you think it needs more love — for whatever reason — then it’s welcome in MangaLove.

      Please make sure to include:

      • The series name
      • The author
      • A short description of the premise
      • What you love about the series. It could be the story, the art, but it could also be your associations with it -- maybe the series reminds you of someone you love, or the period in your life when you first consume it.

Also, commenting on others' recommendations is encouraged! If you love something that someone else shared, let them know!

Do I have to watch/read to what everyone else posts?

Nope. You don't have to consume anything you don't want to. This is about creating a menu of options that people can explore as they wish.

Can I post more than one series in a month?

Nope. Limit one! This helps us be more selective about what we choose, as well as preventing the threads from getting flooded with too many contributions to keep track of.

    5. Anime for someone who doesn't like (shonen) anime that much

Warning: this post may contain spoilers

I personally don't love most anime I've been recommended. Admittedly, shonen anime is pretty predictable and boring to watch to me, and I've only mostly been recommended anime in that genre since it's the most popular. There are some exceptions of course, but nothing has grabbed me too hard. I'm not super into the exaggerated reaction shots and repeating everything that's happening on screen like I can't already see it happening. Announcing your feelings and actions is so tiring.

Really looking for something that makes me laugh or feel something.

I've been getting bored of current TV offerings and I'm trying to boost my Japanese learning so I'm wondering if there's anything out there for me. I do try to watch at least a couple of episodes every time I get something suggested, nothing really clicked for me. Even the ones I do like, I feel like I had to force myself to sit through sometimes.

      Some anime I do enjoy:

      • Cyberpunk: Edgerunners - Even though I really dislike super over the top things, there's something about the relatively simple story and heart in this one. I really loved it and it's probably my favorite so far.
      • most Studio Ghibli things - I mean, who doesn't, right?
      • Your Name and Suzume - both kinda in the same vein of interesting stories and something different that is hard to pull off in conventional live-action, and beautifully drawn to boot
      • Ju Jutsu Kaisen season 1 - I enjoyed it, will probably watch season 2, but waiting for it to finish
      • Persona 5 The Animation - Honestly mostly because I liked the game, the anime was not as great tbh.

Things I've seen and are already on the list and will probably(?) continue -

      • FMA:B (1 episode)
      • Cowboy Bebop (1 episode)
      • Undead Murder Farce
      • Chainsaw Man season 1 (this one's a bit iffy imo, I really can't stand the main character's fascination with boobs, the action is good though and the story is actually kinda interesting)

      Things I've seen and won't continue/didn't particularly enjoy -
(17 episodes of) Death Note, One Punch Man season 1, Demon Hunter season 1

      Edit: Western shows/movies I enjoyed:
      Background shows I'll put on:
      Community
      Brooklyn Nine Nine

Shows that made me feel things:
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul
      The Last of Us
      Mr. Robot

Not shows but things I enjoy:
      Spider-verse movies
Everything Everywhere All at Once (my favorite movie of all time)
The Planet of the Apes trilogy remakes
      Lord of the Rings

Asking on behalf a friend. They just got burnt by a harem series that started out silly and fun, but the harem ended up including the protagonist's cousin, another character's mother and then a loli character (who was 18) and her now-loli grandmother. Just too creepy and uncomfortable for them at that point, and those particular tropes can be... kinda all over anime.

So, we're looking for lighthearted comedy series that don't feature incest or romance with loli characters. My friend did say that they're okay with some fan service, and that they'd prefer a cute art style rather than realistic. Doesn't have to be a harem series either, just lighthearted and fun. My tastes lean towards more serious, dark or action-y works (in part because some of these tropes are so dang common), so I can't recommend much to them.

I did recommend The World Only God Knows and they said it seems right up their alley, and they also said they'd check out Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. So that could help as a reference.

Welcome to the inaugural MangaLove post. Passively being exposed to new manga and anime is one of the things I've missed most about Reddit, so this is an effort to bring some of that spirit to Tildes.

Many thanks to @kfwyre and their AlbumLove series in ~music that I plagiarized was inspired by.

I am kind of out of touch with the Anime scene these days, and as the title says... What should I watch on Crunchyroll?

All genres are a go, I will try anything, but I do tend to prefer your classic fantasy/sci-fi esque action types. I watched Claymore a few years ago and loved it, Hellsing, Tri-gun, Cowboy Bebop, etc.. So just drop some good recommendations if you don't mind.

Edit: Thank you to everyone posting suggestions! It is appreciated.

Behold, we have received a new season of anime. So, I thought it'd be nice to have a place where people can recommend what they're checking out.

For me, I think this is actually a pretty strong season, with lots of promising shows. As for what I've seen so far:

Hormiya: the Missing Pieces - this is basically a lot of the content that the original series cut out in its speedrun through the series. While I would have preferred that they'd just adapted it at a normal pace originally, I'm happy that they're revisiting this series to give it its due.

My Tiny Senpai - Fun to see this webcomic turned manga (that also has a sequel manga) get adapted. If you like fluff romcom slice of life, this is your jam.

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses - This is an interesting one seeing adapted. I enjoy the manga well enough, but I do feel like it'd be more suited as a short than as a full length anime (5 or 10 minute episodes would very much fit the content better, drawing it out did make some moments a bit cringe). That said, they did some incredibly ambitious stuff with cgi in the first episode that made it incredibly interesting just from a visual perspective. If you're a manga reader, do brace yourself for the art style and character design shifts, as I found them more than a bit jarring. Another fluff romcom for you fans out there.

Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon - Oddly enough, I just started reading this light novel series a month ago with no knowledge it was getting an adaptation. I know any sane person's reaction would be that isekai has truly reached the bottom of the barrel, but this will surprise you with its quality, I guarantee it. The source material is a comedy isekai with truly interesting characters, and I think the first episode was a mostly well executed adaptation (LN adaptations tend to lose the main character's internal dialogue which I find important, but here it's included because it's very necessary).

Now, here's some recommendations of stuff I haven't seen yet, but am familiar with source material I'd rec:

The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen - Yes, I know I know, Villainess Otome isekai is the new overpowered mc isekai, a dime a dozen. But trust me, this is a good one. A stellar cast of characters, and yes, while it follows the tropes of the subgenre, I think the stories it tells are incredibly interesting. I started with reading the manga (cancelled due to artist poor health), and then jumped to the original LN, and I have to say this is a series that has just consistent quality across the board.

My Happy Marriage - While I've read a bit of the manga and own the LN's, I haven't read the LN's yet. However, if you like dramatic romances though, this one's for you. It's not quite a "I will fix her", type series, there's elements of that due to her past. But really both of our main characters need a lot of growing to do, and they'll do that together. Expect a slow and dramatic pace.

The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today - Like silly slice of life? This one's for you kids. The manga is a fantastic slice of life following an OL and her rescued cat who really rescued her. The cat's also like 6 feet tall and cooks.

Tenpuru - This is a manga series from the artist, not author, of Grand Blue Dreaming. However, it also has a very similar vibe in general if you enjoy that series, but even sillier if that's possible. I guy trying not to be a playboy like his family is, and flees to a Buddhist temple full of women. Expect absurdity, and yes, definitely a harem, whether he wants it or not.

Saint Cecilia & Pastor Lawrence - A slow paced slice of life with romance undertones. A lazy saint and the pastor that takes care of them, their budding romance, and the friends they make along the way.

Hyakushou Kizoku - this is an odd one to recommend, because I've only actually read a chapter or two of the manga. However, this is from an author you'd all know Hiromu Arakawa, known for such minor series as Full Metal Alchemist and Silver Spoon. This is an autobiographical series of her time growing up in Hokkaido on a farm (experiences that very much inspired and informed Silver Spoon).

Anyways, these are just some of my own thoughts on this season, I'd love to see yours.

I’d really appreciate suggestions for any action-packed anime series you might be able to share.

I “play” Zwift indoors for exercise when I don’t have time to ride my bicycle outside. While Zwift is a huge improvement over nothing, I still find myself watching the clock more than the screen. To help keep my mind busy and pass the time, I’ve been watching anime while riding indoors for the last several years. The more intense the anime, the better!

I think the early Attack on Titan seasons are the most emblematic of what I’m looking for, though I’ve been enraptured by other less likely shows, such as Psycho-Pass and Dr. Stone.

Chainsaw Man, Blue Lock, Shield Hero, Sword Art Online, Parasyte , the first season of Vinland Saga, Shokugeki, and many others have helped me get through countless hours of riding in the past, and I could really use a few new series going forward.

      Thanks in advance!

      Edit: cleaned up some phrasing

Edit 2: It's really hard to come up with an exhaustive list, but as folks jog my memory (or when my own addled brain decides to be useful) I'll add other series I've seen so far as well.

      • Yowamushi Pedal
        • Because: of course
      • Lastman
        • A rare French anime, and I really enjoyed it
      • Fireforce
      • Neon Genesis Evangelion
      • One Punch Man
      • Kill La Kill
      • Gurren Lagann
      • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
        • Watched a few episodes but struggled to get into it
      • Eighty-Six
      • My Hero Academia
      • Demon Slayer
        • Watched through the train movie and discontinued when they turned said movie into the next season
      • Mob Psycho 100
        • Watched a few episodes but struggled to get into it
      • Hunter X Hunter
      • Cowboy Bebop
      • RWBY
        • Struggling with the current season

I really really enjoyed 'Danshi Koukousei no nichijou'. In particular anything-goes hijinx parts, and nice lore.

I also enjoyed metahumor from Saekano and Monogatari, but they lean in their respective category more than comedy part.

Monogatari is a bit heavy and needs attention, so I'm looking for something light and humorous. I don't much enjoy fan service/lewdness unless it serves the purpose of the story or as comic relief.

      Any suggestions welcome!

I have Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Showtime. Possibly Disney+ soon too, but I'm guessing Disney doesn't do a ton of anime (other than Spirited Away? Does that count?).

I'm looking for a good anime show to start watching - I'm brand new to the medium. I've seen guides here and there, but there are so. many. options. so I've had decision paralysis choosing which to watch first.

I guess I'm looking for a bingeable show that's funny and has feel-good characters, but I'm not set on anything specifically. Some, but not a ton, action would be good too I guess. I'm also fine starting off with a lesser-known show if there's a good one!

      Thanks in advance!

Edit: Thanks to whoever moved this to ~anime - didn't know it was a thing! It's been a while since I've been on Tildes so I forgot exactly how it worked.

I love comics and graphic novels, but I haven't devoted a lot of time to manga despite it being in line with my interests. A lot of the stuff I come across seems aimed at younger audiences or is highly romance-focused, neither of which really appeal to me. I'd love to get some good recommendations for manga that is more meant for adults (but is not "adult manga") or that just tells really good stories.

To get a feel for what I might be interested in, here's a very limited list of what I've enjoyed so far:

      • My Brother's Husband was cute and resonant. I like nearly anything that tackles LGBT/queer issues.
      • I read a scanlation of Homunculus and enjoyed its oddness and artwork.
      • Ichi-F was really good too. I like non-fiction, which I realize is rare in manga.
      • Death Note, despite not being what I'm actively looking for, was a great page-turner.
      • Opus was a meta-manga that I enjoyed, despite probably not being able to appreciate it to its fullest given my lack of exposure to the form.

EDIT: I added links in case anyone is unfamiliar with those titles. Also, I forgot to add that I'd prefer manga that are finished rather than ongoing, and I'd prefer ones that don't have a huge number of volumes, though neither of these are definite requirements -- just preferences.

I just finished the first and (for now) only season of Dr. Stone. I loved it. It's definitely a shounen, but interesting characters and the whole science plot makes it a good watch for adults.

I like the idea of learning interesting stuff through anime.

I like shounen with a twist — the typical juvenile stuff usually bores me to no end (the last one I gave up was My Hero Academia). And seinen is usually too serious and dry for my taste. I guess I'm hard to please!

      I also like:

      • Death Note (pretty smart with a great premise)
      • Overlord (now I know VR fantasy is a whole sub-genre, but at the time it was new and awesome for me)
      • Code Geass (a tad too political for my taste, but a great main character)
      • Fullmetal Alchemist (the first one)
      • Mob Psycho 100 - one of my recent favorites
      • One Punch Man
      • Netflix's Castlevania (not actually anime but whatever — great anime-like cartoon)

      I dislike:

      • Fillers and useless scenes (like on Attack on Titan)
      • Pure Drama / Pure Romance

Hey all, I listen to a bunch of podcasts during my commute to/from work, and I was wondering if anyone had some recommendations for good anime podcasts?

I've already made it through All Systems Goku, which followed two of the Giant Bomb guys on their first viewing of Dragon Ball Z Kai. It was a lot of fun! There were a lot of wrestling references, all of which I didn't get, but they had a fun time.

Some of my beloved old animes, like Kare Kano, Escaflowne and Fushigi Yuugi, are not available either on Netflix or Crunchyroll. So I'm curious to know from you guys which old animes (that premiered at least 20 years ago) are still a good watch. Thanks!

FYI: I have already seen the old standards such as Bebop, Trigun, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mobile Suit Gundam, Ghost in Shell, Macross, and maybe a couple others. But this standalone universe of Planetes made me realize there may be a lot more out there of which I am unaware. Thanks!

I recently purchased Junji Ito's Shiver collection, which has nine of his self-descirbed "best" shorts inside:

      • Used Record
      • Shiver
      • Fashion Model
      • Hanging Blimp
      • Marionette Mansion
      • Painter
      • The Long Dream
      • Honored Ancestors
      • Greased

And while overall I would say the collection was well worth the £16 it cost, I will say I was somewhat disappointed in the varying "shivers" delivered by each short.

For example, I found the Fashion Model short to be quite frustrating: compared to the creativity and build up of horror present in some of the other shorts such as Hanging Blimp, it was essentially "creepy looking lady is serial killer". Others such as Used Record seemed as though there was a lot of wasted story.

Meanwhile, some such as Marionette Mansion did a grand job of building a suspenseful atmosphere and The Long Dream was certainly scary to dwell on.

I understand variable impact on the reader is to be expected for so many different works, but for what Ito described as nine of his best I was a little disappointed.

Outside of this collection, the only work of Ito's I have seen is the one where people enter holes carved out for their bodies (which for the record I also enjoyed).

Are others familar with Junji Ito's work? Recommendations for his or similar artists work would be very welcome.

      Edits: paragraphing.

I'm still fairly new to anime (~2.5 years) and have been just watching either classics/high rated anime or whatever everyone else is watching that season and really want to know what are some pretty good anime/manga that are underrated and overshadowed by huge influx of anime every season?

      Mine picks would be:

      • One Outs : It's basically a Sports anime about Baseball with heavily focusing on mind games (similar to Death Note/Code Geass/etc) It is 8.4 on MAL but It's really underrated in terms of it's audience

      • Black Clover : It's really not that bad as people say it is. Yes the adaptation is bad but the story is really good, yeah it's basically generic shonen but it does the generic shonen things much better than other generic shonens. I'd still suggest the manga over the anime (with coming back to see the climax of arcs/seeing your favourite scenes being adapted)

      For Manga:

      • Gokushufudou (The Way of the House Husband) : It's basically a manga about an ex-most wanted gangster now living as a house husband. It's one of the most funniest mangas I've read.

      • Vigilante: Boku no Hero Academia Illegals : It's a spinoff of My Hero Aca which is pretty cool but not really popular. The story could be boiled down to what would've happened if Midoriya wasn't able to pass the UA exams. Oh yeah and it's all canon (the main author verified this).

      That's basically it for what I've read/watched.

Recently I've started getting really into manga/anime that focuses pretty heavily on brawling.

I binged Kengan Asura, which primarily focuses on a fighter named Ohma and his coach as they fight in an underground fighting ring.

Baki was very similar, but probably a bit more silly, and a bit more focused on the conflict with his father.

Part of my problem is I don't really know what to look for after this. Does anyone have any suggestions for either manga or anime that is focused on fighters / fighting like Kengan or Baki?
